While looking for my great grandfather Lewis Cleage I encountered various spellings of his last name.
1870 United States Federal Census
Name: Lewis Cleage
Home in 1870: District 5, McMinn, Tennessee
Age in 1870: 16
In 1970 Lewis Cleage was living in McMinn County with who I think are his parents and siblings. I cannot be positive because relationships were not given in the 1870 census. No job description but he was born in Tennessee. I can't find them in the 1880 Census and by that time Lewis was Clage and married.

Cleage, Lewis
I haven't found him in the 1920 census and I haven't found a death certificate yet. I do not know when or where he died. I don't have a photograph of him.

Kristin, I'm sure you've already covered this, but have you found Jacob and Henry minus their dad in 1920? Perhaps, if you have, you assume that Lewis died between 1918-1920, and narrow your search for his death info to those years.
Renate
Renate, I have found them without him. I was really surprised to find him with them in 1918. I never knew he was in Indianapolis at all. wonder if he died there. I can't find their mother's death certificate either and I know about when and for sure where she died. I'll have to figure out a plan. yes, it does make sense he died during that time.
